BEGINNER'S WHEEL THROWING COURSE
Cost:$550.00 per person
About this experience
Term One 2022 courses run from:
February 15th to April 5th or
February 17th to April 7th.
Each session is two hours.
Experience the joy of ceramics during this 8 week course, where you will learn how to create your very own food safe ceramic items using the potter's wheel.
Throughout the term we will cover the basics of wheel throwing and the ceramic process, including safety, wedging and clay preparation, centring, throwing, trimming, attaching components and glazing using the beautiful selection of glazes and underglazes on offer at Handmaker's Factory.
Your items will be fired for you using the in-house kiln once throughout term and again at the end of term. You will be notified when your second batch of items are ready to collect after term, approximately 2-3 weeks later.
Classes will run for 2 hours each week, allowing time to learn, practice and clean at the end of each class.
The classes have limited spots to ensure that each student has ample one on one time with the teacher and can ask questions with ease.
These classes are designed for absolute beginners, but we advise attending a 'Try the wheel' workshop to get a taste for the process before enrolling in the full 8 week term!
All materials and firing costs are included in the pricing of $550 for 8 weeks. Students have the option to borrow the tools available at Handmaker's Factory or purchase a set of their own to keep.
Your teacher is the energetic and patient Sarah of Snakebird Designs, who will enthusiastically guide you through the first steps of your ceramic journey.
The topics covered in each week are as follows, with scope for individual exploration:
- Week 1: Safety, wedging, centring and the ceramic process
- Week 2: Throwing cylinders
- Week 3: Trimming, throwing bowls
- Week 4: Trimming foot rings and glazing
- Week 5: Attaching components, individual projects
Week 6: Collaring and closed forms

Please wear closed toe shoes, comfortable clothing and nothing you are scared to get dirty (clay washes out but it's best not to take chances).

If a lockdown occurs during the term, make-up classes will be arranged.
