Handmaker's Factory

Maker Men-Urbandon

I'm excited to start the week here at Handmaker's Factory with the first in a new series of blog posts called Maker Men. This series will showcase men who create garments using a variety of crafts. I interviewed Don Pezzano from Urbandon last week, read on to discover more about him.

Tell us a little bit about yourself

I'm a self-employed menswear designer. I live in Sydney's Inner West with my partner, Denise and our dog Bruce. I work every day on making clothing and accessories as a business venture. Most of my business is done online and I have a market stall once a month at Eveleigh Markets in Sydney.

What do you create?
Menswear and only menswear, but many women wear my clothes. I either use reclaimed and vintage material like old army tent or, my favorite material, wool. I have just started making hats. My designs are very masculine and experimental at the same time. I love pattern making!

What led you to learn to sew?
I actually learnt to sew in high school along with woodwork, metalwork and cooking. My mother sewed and knitted all the time so she helped me a lot. When I moved out of home I got her old machine. I made a few things when I was young but I have only been seriously sewing for about two years. I do have an old Simplicity sewing book I refer to for specific techniques. Mistakes become 'design features'!

What are your biggest inspirations?
I am mainly inspired by science-fiction and fantasy movies. I have loved film costume from an early age and  I think my work shows it. Telling a story with clothes is very enjoyable and easy with a backlog of visual references from years of film appreciation. Last collection I was on a 'bootleg' roll after seeing Lawless (with Tom Hardy) and this collection gets some motivation from the Tom Cruise movie Oblivion. I get into the 'spirit' of the movie, not necessarily recreating the clothes. They are part of a wider story of the collections.

What has been your favourite creation?
Possibly the jacket I made this week. It is a sleeveless hooded cotton one-button coat made from two pattern pieces that join at the center back. It has a hand-made leather button that I put on all my pieces now. It is simple and effective and I am very happy with my pattern making!

What are you sewing this weekend?
I'm working on a purple boiled wool coat with in-seam pockets and a collar that is part of the body pattern. Most are the seams are external and the sleeve seam rotates around the arm. Also, I am making wool and leather gloves, a linen coat with hand stitched seam details and starting two custom orders for wool coats. If I have time I want to make some hats too as my straw bodies I ordered just arrived. (Just the usual really!)
